Narrative

A Planet Full of Cats has a complete and intriguing narrative that far surpasses that of most games in the hidden object genre. Mysterious signals emanate from a planet deep within the Federated Feline System, and a brave space bounty hunter named Judy is sent to investigate. As she explores an expansive space base, she discovers strange goings on beneath the surface of the planet.

The narrative is told largely through dialogue between different cats and Judy, as well as through exploration, via things such as visual clues, and through the gameplay itself. There is an eclectic cast of feline characters, all uniquely interesting, in terms of appearance, personality, and back story.

Gameplay

As with the narrative, A Planet Full of Cats provides levels of entertainment beyond what one might expect from a hidden object game. There are multiple facets to the experience and lots of extra activities. At its most basic, however, players embark on Metroidvania-style exploration of a mysterious planet, mostly within a problematic base station. Sometimes there are additional items to look out for, and each area has an indicator so the player knows how many of each thing are left to find. A hint option is also available with a short cooldown between uses.

The newest addition to the Full of Cats series introduces a whole heap of extra mechanics to elevate the gameplay beyond that of the previous titles, which were themselves highly entertaining. While most levels/areas do not feature the sneaky super-hidden cats that Devcats fans may be accustomed to, there is plenty of new content to keep players busy. This includes light puzzles, such as connecting wires or pipes, a number of boss fights, discoverable objects to utilise, unlockable skills, extra hidden item objectives, and secret rooms.

Delightful cat characters throughout the locations will provide quest-like missions that will enable further exploration when completed, such as finding a door pass, a series of crystals, or a battery. Skills can be unlocked by discovering secret rooms and include abilities such as x-ray vision, healing, and a powerful punch, all with cat-tastic names. These skills often make it possible for players to access new areas and explore further. This all equates to an additional level of challenge when it comes to exploration and makes the overall experience much more satisfying.

Boss fights typically consist of three rounds, each requiring the player to find a specific number of items, thereby reducing the health of the monster. These boss fights occur at key moments, denoting a certain level of progress in terms of physical exploration and advancement of the narrative. As such, they provide a good sense of achievement and reassure the player that they are making good headway.

The game includes a journal of sorts where each location and NPC is named and described upon discovery. This provides some nice detail and additional context. A map is also available, with each area being revealed as it is discovered. Amongst the many bug fixes and general improvements made to A Planet Full of Cats since its initial release are map markers to indicate available quests, open doors, rewards, as well as visual hints for secret rooms. The Devcats team is listening to and acting on player feedback in a positive and timely way, graciously acknowledging mistakes and oversights they may have made when creating their most ambitious project yet!

Styling

A Planet Full of Cats has a very colourful, 2D, cartoon aesthetic. The cute hand-drawn illustrations consist of detailed linework on mostly monochromatic or limited colour palette backgrounds, with cats being filled in with colour as they are discovered. Each of the vast array of locations is highly distinct, and there is a lot of visual interest throughout the game as a whole.

The exclusive soundtrack is a highlight of the game and highly atmospheric, with an assortment of music that fits not only the game perfectly but also each part of the planet. The music has a somewhat retro feel, with electronic sounds combining to create a variety of tracks that range from slightly sinister with a faster tempo, to more mellow, moderate energy numbers. A host of sound effects is also used to help increase immersion, with cute cat noises (unsurprisingly) being the most prominent.

Summary

A Planet Full of Cats is by far the most extensive and involved game that Devcats has created so far, and provides a level of interaction and quality often not afforded to games within this genre, so saturated with basic offerings that can appear churned out with little consideration.

There is a level of care evident in all of Devcats’ titles, but they have taken things to the next level with A Planet Full of Cats. It will take anything from 6 to 9 hours to complete and has a lot to offer. From the predominant cat-finding mechanic to the additional gameplay features, from the adorable, stylised visuals to the original and evocative soundtrack, not to mention the engaging and immersive narrative and the delightful cat characters. Additionally, by supporting Devcats games, players are also supporting the studio’s work, raising awareness and funds for cat rescue, adoption, and rehabilitation. I was blown away by this hidden cat game, and I’d highly recommend it, not only to fans of the genre but also to those who typically find hidden object games too casual or simplistic – this one is not like the others!
