“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” – Jorge Luis Borges

New Location
The main, or perhaps most obvious, new addition to the game in the Spirit City Magical Library Expansion is the new location, and it’s the sort of library avid readers dream about! Players can enjoy relaxing or engaging in activities in the study, which consists of a desk and arcana space (for doing magic), in the cosy, cushion-laden nook, or in a comfy armchair by the fireplace, and of course, all of the walls are lined with books and magical knick-knacks. Just like the existing locations, these can be fully customised with a selection of plants, soft furnishings, furniture, and lighting. A lot of the choices can be coloured according to the player’s tastes, allowing them to really personalise the different areas in their library.
Previous expansions have also included fresh soundscapes, but that is not the case for Spirit City Magical Library. However, there are new, fun ways to use existing sound effects to help bring the new location to life. For example, the ‘tasty bubbling’ soundscape that was added in the Cozy Kitchen DLC can now be used when brewing potions over a cauldron to give an appropriately “double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble” vibe!

New Spirits
Spirit: City Magical Library introduces thirteen new companions for players to discover. Among the new additions, players will find Know-It-Owl, a well-respected (and slightly intimidating) teacher with a penchant for surprise quizzes, Bookwyrm, an adorable collector of stories, and Inkitty, a deceptively grumpy-looking lover of mess and mischief. As in the base game, the spirit-dex contains hints on how to find the different spirits, and players will have to meet certain conditions, such as time of day, activity, and sounds, in order to begin their search for a specific companion.

What Else is New?
Other new additions included in Spirit City Magical Library include heaps of new options for character customisations, including lots of new outfits and clothing options such as hats, tops, shoes, and more that will let players sport a studious look, or flaunt their arcane abilities. On top of this, players can also partake in a selection of new activities, including research, experiments, spell casting, and summoning!

Summary
Spirit City Magical Library is a substantial update to an already brilliant game. The new content adds to all of the more fun aspects of the game without getting in the way of the productivity tool’s efficacy or hindering the player’s focus on external tasks. As with the previous content, spirit collecting is a largely idle task, and the additional customisation options encourage players to earn points through things like completing to-do lists in order to create an inviting and functional library in which to complete tasks or relax.
The amount of new content is comparable to that of the base game in terms of the new space available, customisations, and the extra spirit companions that can be found. It absolutely justifies its moderate price tag, especially considering the number of free updates and additions that have already been, and are continuing to be provided by the developers. The new content is well considered, thematic, fun and a wonderful addition to the base game. If you already enjoy Spirit City Lofi Sessions, then you’ll love Magical Library; I’d go so far as to say it’s my favourite expansion so far. If you haven’t played but are looking for a charming idle game with creature collection, productivity tools, and a focus on general well-being, then look no further!
