Gameplay

Hidden in my Paradise sees players explore a number of different levels and find a prescribed list of hidden objects within the different scenes. The objects are hidden with a range of difficulty and sometimes the player will need to find multiples of the same object such as a type of flower. All of the items are visible without the need for further interactions with other objects. There is, however, an additional objective in each level that requires the player to find a small number of fairies. These are not visible but certain objects will be sparkling and when moved with reveal the fairy.

A fun extra element, not common in hidden object games, is that each level has a couple of photos that the player must recreate using objects and creatures in the scene provided and take their own photo. This adds another challenge to each level and is a unique feature of this particular game.

Coins will be awarded for finding items, recreating photos, as well as a few other actions, they can also be obtained from chests that are hidden in each scene. These coins can be used in the shop to purchase objects and creatures that can then be used in the level creator. Coins can also be used to buy tickets for the Gatcha machine which will also award items for creating custom levels.

Narrative and Styling

There is little to no narrative in Hidden in my Paradise but the experience does not feel lacking as a result. The whimsical scenes, characters and creatures create a fun game world that is a pleasure to explore.

The game features a cute, vibrant 2D cartoon art style that uses lightly textured blocks of colour and crayon-like outlines that help give a soft, cosy feel to the visuals. Players can choose to adjust each scene to be in either daylight, dusk, or nighttime as well as choose from a range of different fun filters for varying aesthetics.

The soundtrack is upbeat and jolly, but with a lightness that stops it from feeling too energetic for the style of gameplay, dominated by soft piano and magical twinkling the music suits the game very well and provides a great audio backdrop for the experience. The sound effects are somewhat minimal but also quite adorable and are a lovely addition.

Summary

Hidden in my Paradise is a very casual and relaxing game. It lends itself to longer play sessions, especially if getting immersed in creating a custom level but is also well suited to players who prefer to dip in and out of the game. The cute aesthetic matches the gameplay and style of the scenes on offer and helps create a well-rounded and charming experience. The photography aspect is a lot of fun and provides something a little different for this genre. Overall, this game is very enjoyable and stress-free and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for something cosy to play on a rainy day or cold evening!
