Gameplay

100 Hidden Cthulhu Fish gives players four different levels, each with 100 fish to be found. The controls are simple and intuitive, using just a mouse to navigate the screen and select fish. There are also 100 Steam achievements available which adds to the satisfaction and fun of finding the plethora of fish. The casual gameplay is fairly straightforward and pretty standard for a hidden object game but the theme and artwork afford it some originality.

Styling

100 Hidden Cthulhu Fish boasts a simple but stylised hand-drawn art style that depicts its Lovecraftian-inspired scenes in sketchy linework, black on a white background. As each fish is found it will be coloured pale green which adds some nice contrast and a pop of colour. The imagery is charmingly grotesque and gives the game a unique appearance.

The game’s soundtrack features a well-made and somewhat funky backing track, which while enjoyable does feel slightly out of place against the theme of the game and its surreal and disturbing visuals. There are some interesting sound effects, the unenthusiastic cheer that plays when a level is completed is particularly fun and definitely fits with the rest of the experience.

Summary

100 Hidden Cthulhu Fish is a short game, taking around 10-15 minutes to complete. It does not pose too much of a challenge and is quite a relaxing experience. The gruesome imagery, Lovecraftian inspiration, and sketchy hand-drawn art are the highlights of the experience and give the game a darker overall feel than some similar games that are on offer. This is a fun way to spend a tea break or pass a few minutes and I would definitely recommend it to fans of hidden object games.
