Gameplay
“Body doubling is a productivity technique where another person is present—either in person or virtually—while you work on a task, designed to improve focus, motivation, and accountability, particularly for people with ADHD or executive dysfunction. The “body double” does not need to assist with the task but acts as a quiet, steadying, non-judgmental presence that reduces distractions and procrastination.“
On Together is primarily a virtual co-working or body-doubling space in which people can come together to focus on specific tasks. Upon starting the game, players can choose to host a session or join an existing one. There are usually a good number of sessions available, and a selection of tags helps choose one that best suits one’s individual needs. Tags include: focus, chatter, playtime, 18+, and modded.
On Together provides multiple tools on offer to aid productivity, such as a to-do list, a timer, a weekly task manager, and a journal with a mood tracker. The timer appears to be based on the Pomodoro technique as it allows the player to set a focus timer, a short break timer that will run after each focus session, and a long break timer that will run after a set number of focus sessions.
The virtual space is one moderately-sized area with several zones, such as a library, café, park, and a beach. Within each area, the player can choose to focus on a task or activity, though some areas have different focus activities available. For example, on the basketball court, players can focus on exercise, and on the yoga mats, meditation is an option for focus. Some areas have more fun activities that are more suitable for breaks, including a music area where players can play a selection of instruments, or at the docks, where fishing is available.
On Together rewards players for focusing and completing tasks on their to-do lists with tickets, which are used as currency within the game. There are a couple of vendors in the virtual environment, one sells fishing bait and tools, and the other sells snacks and drinks. Different snacks will apply effects to the player, for example, one flavour of soda will allow higher jumping, another can be used for quicker movement, and bubblegum can be used to fly, with each flavour providing a different level of elevation, movement, and speed. Additionally, a character menu can be accessed without leaving the virtual space, which lets players customise their characters and purchase new cosmetic items, as well as select pets that can be earned by focusing on specific things while wearing certain cosmetic items.
There is a chat function within each session, the use of which varies depending on the tags used. However, in sessions where the chatter tag is selected, this can still be hidden if it becomes too much of a distraction. The game also features a large number of achievements (127 to be exact), and while some of these encourage productivity, some are simply fun and, as such, can be somewhat distracting. For a game designed for people who will benefit from body-doubling, that is, people who struggle to maintain focus or struggle with executive function, the number of things within the game that have the potential to disrupt productivity is perhaps a little high. They are very enjoyable, but ofc course, this is part of the appeal of such distractions.
In order to limit any potential distraction the game could pose, On Together allows players to choose from a selection of viewing modes. As well as full screen and windowed, the game can also be limited to the bottom of the screen, the right side of the screen, or the character and the active UI elements can be displayed over the player’s desktop.
Styling
On Together has a delightful cartoon-like art style with slightly bold line work and uses a colour palette of vibrant pastel shades. This works well with the cute overall aesthetic and theme, in particular, the collectable pets, adorable outfits, and different locations. Character models are customisable and have a slightly kawaii feel to them, fitting well within the rest of the visuals.
Players can choose what music to play in On Together, with options consisting of a range of upbeat lo-fi tracks that are very relaxing and not at all invasive. There is a huge selection of music, but enough to avoid constant repetition, especially as it largely sits in the background. There are some sound effects that help add to the overall sense of immersion; some of these can be controlled by the player, such as campfire noises, rain, and wind.
Summary
On Together is a delightful take on the increasingly popular productivity genre. It offers a cute aesthetic, charming environments, customisable audio, a range of thoughtful tools to aid focus, virtual co-working or body doubling, and plenty of fun achievements, activities, and minigames for the all-important breaks. It has the potential to be a great help to people who struggle with focus levels and procrastination. On Together does have the potential to become a distraction due to the amount of extras it includes, but firm use of the break timers can help minimise this. Overall, I think the game achieves what it sets out to and will provide a lot of value to its players. As somebody with ADHD, I find that these types of aids can be invaluable, and I’d happily recommend this one to people who are curious about body doubling or to anyone looking for ways to increase their productivity.
