Spirit City Lofi Session: All Aboard – A New Expansion

“I like trains. I like their rhythm, and I like the freedom of being suspended between two places, all anxieties of purpose taken care of: for this moment I know where I am going.” – Anna Funder

New Location – Train

The main, or perhaps most obvious, new addition to the game in the Spirit City Lofi Sessions DLC is that of a new room, and it’s a train! Players can enjoy both the interior and exterior of the train, and just like the existing locations, these can be fully customised with a selection of wall coverings, seating options, flooring, and accessories. Some of the options have further colour options, allowing players to really personalise their travel experience. Additionally, there are a number of new backgrounds providing a choice of scenery to look at as the train makes its way along the tracks. These include the city, countryside, a cloud city, and even space and under the sea. The train’s movement speed and motion can also be adjusted using sliders.

A new space would not be complete without fresh soundscapes, and this DLC offers three: relaxing rails, ambient chatter, and deep sea echoes. Some of the existing sounds will also affect the scenery being displayed, for example, ‘rumbling thunders’ will alter the lighting and cause sporadic lightning flashes.

New Spirits

The Spirit Ciity Lofi Sessions All Aboard Expansion introduces five totally new spirits as well as six discoverable spirit-variants that players can discover. Among the new companions players will find Coorier, a dutiful, mail-carrying pigeon, as well as Aviotter, an otter who likes to soar through the clouds with its jetpack! The new variants are fun new takes on existing companions, such as Dandylion, a distant cousin of the three-eyed cat, Lenny. As in the base game, the spirit-dex contains hints on how to find the different spirits, and finding spirit variants will also require the player to have the original version of the spirit with them.

What Else is New?

Most of the productivity tools have remained the same, including the timer, to-do lists, journal, and habit tracker. However, there is now a dynamic session timer, meaning that the train’s movement is linked to the player’s work and break times. Additionally, a new productivity tracker has been added, a great new tool that allows players to see completed tasks that were previously added to the to-do list. Rather excitingly, the amount of lo-fi tracks available has been vastly increased, with a whole array of new music available. There do not appear to be any new character customisations available, but the number of preset slots has been increased from three to five, allowing players to switch between a larger selection of favourite looks more easily.

Summary

Spirit City Lofi Session All Aboard is a substantial update to an already brilliant game. The new content adds to all of the more fun aspects of the game without getting in the way of the productivity tool’s efficacy or hindering the player’s focus on external tasks. As with the previous content, spirit collecting is a largely idle task, and the additional customisation options encourage earning points through things like completing to-do lists in order to create a cosy train cabin in which to complete tasks or relax.

The amount of new content is comparable to that of the base game in terms of the new space available, customisations, and the extra spirit companions that can be found. It absolutely justifies its price tag, especially considering the number of free updates and additions that have already been provided. The new content is well considered, thematic, fun and a wonderful addition to the base game. If you already enjoy Spirit City Lofi Sessions, then you’ll love All Aboard. If you haven’t played but are looking for a charming idle game with creature collection, productivity tools, and a focus on general well-being, then look no further!
